The ‘Key to the North’ project was established to conserve Pontefract Castle and allow visitors to explore heritage which has previously been inaccessible. Successfully securing a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, allowed the project to progress, increase access, and develop and share knowledge of the site’s signifcant regional and national history.
Capital works included a major conservation programme, consolidating the remaining stonework and making it safe and sustainable. Landscaping, opening-up disused pathways and access routes, and the creation of three viewing platforms were also undertaken, alongside the refurbishment of the previously dilapidated Arts and Crafts building to create a visitor centre with interpretation, a flexible learning space, shop, toilets and small café, to broaden the visitor appeal.
HERA have been appointed to act as Lead Monitor during the Development and Delivery Phases of the project, advising on project management, procurement, costs and cashlow, funding and long-term viability.
